Songs For Andrew

img[Updated] - goto the Songs For Andrew page for the mp3s.

Notes on streaming

imgThese stream links open a new window with ActiveX controls which stream the mp3 directly into your browser, if you're using IE or Netscape 4. Note that if you stream the file into your browser, the mp3 file will be in your cache - clicking on the download icon after streaming it will download the whole file immediately and you won't have to wait... If the track doesn't play continuously, your internet connection is really shit - like mine :)

Notes on downloading

imgYou are absolutely free to download these tracks, and do what you want with them - delete them, screw them through horrible filters in Cool Edit, or even burn them to CD or your minidisc and listen to them on your bike. However, they have been optimised to stream into a browser on a 56kbps modem, so the sound quality leaves a little to be desired. If you click on the download button, the file will download and start playing in your default player when the whole file has arrived. If you just want to save it, right click on the link and save target. If you want a copy of the CD quality recording, email me and I'll let you know where to send your cheque to ;)

Technical Notes

imgIf you want to know how this page was set up, first of all have a look at the Webmonkey tutorial on Embedding Media Players. This shows you how to set up the ActiveX controls and so on. In addition to that, I used Cool Edit 2000 to bounce a 30MB wav file down to 430KB (hence the tracks kind of sound like they're being played in a box full of water ;)). I did this because a) it will stream uniterrupted into a browser at 56kbps and b) I couldn't be arsed to buy more webspace and have 21 3MB mp3s sitting there ;).

imgI also used Cool Edit 2000 because its the free version (ie it doesn't have multitracking), and you can download it from their website for nothing. Cool Edit gives you a lot of transparent control over your file conversions, and also lets you do noise reduction and other stuff that other mp3 rippers don't. To get the file size right down, I set the Bit Rate at 32 kbps, and the Bandwidth at 11Khz.
